Ngorongoro Crater is one of Africa’s most iconic natural wonders and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Formed over two million years ago from the collapse of a massive volcano, it is the world’s largest intact volcanic caldera. This natural amphitheater spans 260 square kilometers and shelters a remarkable diversity of wildlife within its steep, 600-meter-high walls. Known as the “Eighth Wonder of the World,” the crater offers one of the best safari experiences in Africa.
Ngorongoro Crater is a self-contained ecosystem and one of the few places in Africa where you can see the Big Five—lion, leopard, rhinoceros, elephant, and buffalo—in a single day. Its fertile plains support large numbers of animals year-round, including zebras, wildebeests, elands, warthogs, and gazelles. The crater’s soda lake, Lake Magadi, is often tinged pink with flamingos, while the Lerai Forest and swamps provide refuge for hippos, elephants, and birdlife.
The crater is also home to the rare black rhino, which is closely monitored and protected. With no fences and limited space, wildlife is highly concentrated, allowing for incredibly close encounters and unmatched game viewing.
Ngorongoro Crater is located in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, just 180 km (about 3.5 hours by road) west of Arusha, and is often included in Tanzania’s Northern Safari Circuit. Visitors can reach the crater via:
Road transfers from Arusha, Lake Manyara, Serengeti, or Tarangire
Chartered flights to nearby airstrips such as Lake Manyara or Seronera
