Tarangire National Park is one of Tanzania’s most underrated safari destinations, celebrated for its ancient baobab trees, impressive dry-season migrations, and the largest concentration of elephants in northern Tanzania. Located in the heart of the Manyara Region, the park spans 2,850 square kilometers and forms an essential part of the Northern Safari Circuit—ideally combined with nearby Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, and Serengeti National Park.
Unlike its more famous neighbors, Tarangire offers a quieter, more intimate safari experience without sacrificing wildlife diversity. During the dry season (June to October), the Tarangire River becomes a vital water source, attracting huge gatherings of wildlife—wildebeest, zebras, buffaloes, giraffes, gazelles, and impalas. This spectacular congregation rivals the Serengeti’s Great Migration, making it a top destination for wildlife photographers and nature enthusiasts.
The park’s varied landscape includes granite ridges, savannah woodlands, swamps, and river valleys. Over 550 bird species have been recorded here, solidifying its reputation as one of East Africa’s premier birdwatching locations. You’ll also encounter giant termite mounds, often inhabited by dwarf mongooses, and breathtaking contrasts between lush wetlands and sunburnt plains.
Tarangire is approximately 118 km (around 2.5 hours by road) southwest of Arusha, Tanzania’s safari gateway. Visitors can reach the park via:
Road transfers from Arusha, Lake Manyara, or Ngorongoro
Chartered flights from Arusha Airport or Kilimanjaro International Airport (KIA)
Custom itineraries designed and organized by Egreat Safari Tanzania
The iconic baobab trees and sweeping landscapes make Tarangire a photographer’s dream. Sunrises and sunsets cast golden hues over the acacia plains and riverbanks. The southern and eastern swamps support flamingos and waterfowl, adding a rich variety of visual experiences year-round.
Dry Season (June to October) – Excellent for wildlife viewing as animals gather around the Tarangire River. Cooler mornings and dry skies make it the most popular time to visit.
Green Season (November to May) – A lush, scenic period ideal for birdwatching and photography. Expect fewer tourists, but note that roads may be muddy from March to May.
For Wildlife Viewing: June to October (dry season)
For Birdwatching & Green Scenery: November to May (green season)
